FAQs

There can be many questions when it comes to booking a photographer and having your portraits done and that’s good! It means that you really care about the quality of your experience and artwork. These are just some of the questions that I come across frequently and my hope is that with answering them, I can put your mind at ease and help you enjoy the process.

Q: First, what is the process?

A: Kim Bales Photography is more than your basic Headshot or Family Portrait Studio.

I offer sessions that are meant to empower you and your relationships, and give you a space to feel seen.  While the end results of each session can differ greatly, the over all process is the same. It all starts with a phone consultation and the questions “Why do you want to be photographed?” “How do you want to be seen?” and “What types of artwork are you hoping to display at the end?”

From this point, we can map out your session and determine any wardrobe and makeup needs.  The day of your photo session is all about you! You will be welcomed into the studio and we will go through all of the amazing clothes you want to be photographed in and get started.  No matter your reason for the session (business or personal), I will walk you through a series of poses that are meant to complement your style and empower your being. This time is all about you. Relax and have fun. You may want to set up a date night afterwards, because you will leave in your full power and confidence looks good on you!

About 2 weeks after your session, you will be invited back in for a Reveal/Ordering appointment. By this point you’ve already had a chance to see the wonderful products that can be made with your images and all you have to do is decide which images you would like to purchase.  Some people only order a few images while others take them all… it’s completely up to you.

All purchased images come as a printed work of art as well as a digital file for you to share on social media and your safekeeping.

Q: Do you photograph High School Seniors and Couples as well?

A: Yes! My main focus is on empowering people. I used to say my path was to empower women, but I quickly realized that men and youth need this as well.

Whether you are looking for a new Headshot that best represents who you are in your business, a High School Senior wanting to commemorate your last year of high school, a family wanting to create memories and share a bond amongst yourselves, or a person wanting to get in touch with their inner spirit, I am here for you!

Q: Is a phone/in-person consultation really necessary? Can’t we just chat through email or text?

A: YES! To all! Taking the time to meet in person or over the phone gives me a better sense of who you are personally and your style. These consultations don’t have to take up much of your time but really do make all the difference in how we connect and create together. After the initial consultation, we can absolutely switch to text or email for future notifications if that is what you prefer.

Q: How should I prepare myself?

A: Depending on your session type, we could have a lot to think about, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Some helpful tips to consider:

          • Haircuts/Color- Schedule this 10-14 days before your session to give the new look time to settle.

          • Nails- Feel free to use this time as a reason to go get a mani/pedi. Having your nails shaped and all the same length will add to a more                 polished look. And speaking of polish now is not the time to try that new heavy tone you’ve been eyeing. Go with a clear coat or neutral               colors that won’t grab all of the attention. If dark or bright tones are your thing, by all means own it.

          • Waxing- Depending on your session type, this may need to be addressed. Have this taken care of 3-5 days before your session to give                   your skin time to calm down. No one likes angry red welts.

          • Tanning- While tanning is popular, it is not recommended. Tanning beds and sprays can cause your skin to turn unnatural colors (no one             wants to look like an Umpa Lompa in their images) and there is the risk of sunburn and premature aging when lying out in the sun.                       Getting a daily dose of vitamin D is important, but let’s not overdo it.

Q: What do I bring to my photo session?

A: All of this will be covered during your consultation. We will go over wardrobe, accessories, makeup, you name it!

Q: How many outfits am I supposed to bring? I’m having a hard time choosing.

A: While we will typically have time to get you photographed in 3-5 different outfits, bring as many as you want! We can go through them together and pick what best fit for the look you are going for. When considering what to bring, remember that we want to use textures over patterns. Some patterns can be busy and take center stage (which we don’t want!), while textures tend to complement and add interest. Think cable sweaters, knit tops, the fit of a good cotton t-shirt, jeans, etc.

Q: I’m awesome at hair and makeup! Do I still need to hire an artist for my session?

A: No. This is optional! If you are someone who rocks at doing your own hair and makeup by all means, rock it! If you are someone like me who doesn’t, then let’s consider it as an option. Also consider it as an option if you just want the additional pampering. Some women say it’s like going to the spa before their session.

Q: How long before I come back to see my images?

A: The Reveal and Ordering session will be scheduled approximately 2-3 weeks after your photo session.

Q: How much editing is done on my images?

A: Good question. My goal is to make you feel as beautiful as you are! I can pose your body in flattering positions that can make you look slimmer, add curves, you name it. But in the end I want you to look and feel like unapologetically you!

I help smooth skin and take away unwanted shadows, but leave your smile lines (you’ve earned them!) and I will also smooth out clothing.

Anything above and beyond that can be discussed but is typically not done without your wanting or consent.

Q: You say ‘the best images from our session’. How many is that?

A: Typically, around 20-25 images. For family sessions and larger groups, you can expect 30-40 images.

Q: What is the Reveal/Ordering Session?

A: The magic has happened… this is where it continues as you see the results of what we created together. You will be invited back into the studio and together we will watch a slideshow of your images and then look through them one by one. At that point you will pick your favorites and we will order the products that best suit your desires. I make it as easy as possible by walking you through every step of the process and showing you examples of all of the products so you know exactly what to expect.

Q: Do I have to place my order at the reveal session?

A: Yes. Please bring along the people who are going to have any say in what or how much you order to this session. It is also a good idea to go over the price list with them beforehand so there are no surprises.

Q: What if I just want the digitals?

A: Everything purchased comes as a print and a digital version. There is magic in printed artwork and it’s important that you get to experience that magic.

Q: What are my payment options?

A: While cash and check are preferred (I’m a little old fashioned), I do accept credit cards and payment plans. Gift cards are also available through my Square Shop.

Q: How does the payment plan work?

A: Options vary per order. We can discuss this while placing your order.

Q: When will I receive my print products?

A: Products are ordered after final payment is made and delivered within 2-4 weeks.

Q: What if I need to cancel?

A: I understand, life happens. If something comes up that can’t be avoided, I offer one reschedule at no additional cost when it's done at least 7 (seven) days in advance.

If you need to cancel completely, please do so at least 7 (seven) days before your session.

If it is within the 7 (seven) day window and a reschedule is not wanted, the booking fee is non-refundable as I will still have to pay anyone who is staffed for your session as they will not be able to book something else in that time frame.

Q: Do you offer gift cards?

A: Yes! Gift cards make for great birthday gifts, anniversary presents, or just because.

I also offer custom gift packages for Small Businesses who would like to have something special for their clients. These are ideal for Realtors closing their sales, or any other business that wishes to honor their best customers with personal branded thank you cards and special packaging.
